REVOLT FOR THE CHILDREN OF TOMORROW

ACT NOW OR FOREVER HOLD YOUR PEACE
And did those feet in ancient time
Walk upon England's mountain green?
And was the holy Lamb of God
On England's pleasant pastures seen?
And did the countenance divine
Shine forth upon our clouded hills?
And was Jerusalem builded here
Among those dark satanic mills?

Bring me my bow of burning gold!
Bring me my arrows of desire!
Bring me my spear! O clouds, unfold!
Bring me my chariot of fire!
I will not cease from mental fight,
Nor shall my sword sleep in my hand,
Till we have built Jerusalem
In England's green and pleasant land.

William Blake 1804

Speaking for myself I'm worried - extremely worried - about the imminent fate of this old planet.  Like many people, I have had a little awareness about Climate Change for some time.  Recently the penny has started to drop - thanks largely to a wonderfully inspiring group of people called Extinction Rebellion who have come together to create and implement solutions to the grave crisis our Earth now faces.
I first heard about this group (known as XR) in autumn 2018 when they occupied five of London's bridges in a mass-protest against governmental inaction on the Climate Crisis (as it is now known to be!) I instantly felt a profound empathy with what these folks were up to and contacted XR in London to discuss setting up a group in my local town of Penzance, which is in West Cornwall, Great Britain.  Despite my wish and intention to form a group then, my own life was very unstable as I was homeless, ill and already deeply committed to some very demanding civil rights activism concerning the murder of black Muslim US prisoner Darren Rainey and the relentless campaign of The Caged Crusader - my dear friend and brother Harold Hempstead, aka The Witness, aka Miami Harold.   I had to be realistic and admit to myself that it was not practical for me to try to form yet another campaigning group under those circumstances.
As things occurred I got my sick-money cut off by this reactionary government and so became a virtual destitute (along with half a per cent of the British population, around 300,000 to date) and did not form a local XR group.  Happily though some other folks did and I soon became involved with Extinction Rebellion Penzance.  This group is now thriving, as is our neighbour-group in St.Just.  As indeed are numerous other groups on this island and in many lands a-foreign.
All the info on XR is of course available on the jewel-net (sometimes called the internet.)
What I'm giving here is a personal view. XR can inform you of what they are all about. If you are moved by what you read and hear of this group I strongly suggest you find (or form) a group in your own area or nation - (If living under totalitarianism obviously proceed with caution!)
One of the most admirable qualities of Extinction Rebellion is its insistence on the ethos and techniques of Peaceful-Resistance, also known as Non Violent Direct Action which has its cultural roots in the Ahimsa of the classical culture of Vedic ancient India.
By the later half of the nineteenth century a few books on Buddhism, Hinduism, Vedanta, Zazen and other mystic traditions of the orient started appearing in Europe in translation.  Count Leo Tolstoy, the great Anarchist author came across an ancient Tamil text rendered into German - Tirukkural.  This, combined with his devout Christianity and staunch Anarchism, crystallized into a philosophy of peaceful resistance to governmental mal and social iniquity in its myriad forms.
Among the countless millions of people around the world who have been uplifted by Tolstoyan philosophy was a young Indian lawyer by the name of Mohandas Ghandi
Using the philosophy of Ahimsa to animate a brilliant strategy of civil-resistance, Gandhi freed one of the World's largest countries from one of the world's most powerful empires.  Gandhi had also been influenced by Henry David Thoreau, the great American Transcendentalist author who lived wild in the woods of Walden and preached the moral doctrine of Civil Disobedience. (Thoreau had been exposed to the "new" Hindu ideas along with Ralph Waldo Emerson.)  Thoreau was happy to spend some nights in jail for refusing to pay his taxes as he disapproved of the Mexican-American War being waged by the emerging colonial super-power against its impoverished brother-nation.  He was a man of conscience who believed that you should not cooperate with that which you believe to be wrong.  This idea, combined with many Hindu concepts, strongly influenced Ghandi's notion of Satyagraha which is basically relying on the power of truth to animate a stance of non-cooperation with a corrupt government or power-structure.
From Gandhi the light passed to Dr Martin Luther King Jr. in Alabama, USA.  Dr King was profoundly influenced by the active-pacifism of Mahatma (Great Soul) Gandhi and its influence became central to his monumental struggle for Civil Rights for USA's Black population in the 1960's.  In the psyche of Black America, Dr King is perhaps on a similar level to that of His Holiness Tenzin Gyatso, the 14th Dalai Lama, is to Tibetans. The "humble monk" from the roof of the world is another world-famous proponent of non-violent resistance to oppression who received the Noble Prize for Peace in 1989.
With Ahimsa firmly at the centre of the Extinction Rebellion campaign's philosophy, the group is attempting to quite literally save the world! That's good enough for me and I am very happy to play an active role in this great existential drama, this spiritual battle that has been declared.
My own view is that those of us involved in this rebellion against the extinction of life on Earth would be wise to continue studying the history of organized struggle to glean all the lessons available and perhaps avoid making some of the mistakes of our predecessors in similar movements.
Happily, the people who created this movement have already done deep studies and based policy on a perfect blend of moral-philosophy and peer-reviewed scientific studies, combined with proven effective techniques of civil disobedience.
I recently discovered the brilliant slogan "The greatest threat to the world is the belief that somebody else will save it."   If you feel this - then you know what to do.
Before they shot him, Joe Hill, the legendary International Workers of the World union-activist summed up the situation in three words that seem to ring true in the face of the great darkness we now face:  "Don't mourn - ORGANIZE!"

Ahimsa is the highest virtue, Ahimsa is the highest self-control,
Ahimsa is the greatest gift, Ahimsa is the best suffering,
Ahimsa is the highest sacrifice, Ahimsa is the finest strength,
Ahimsa is the greatest friend, Ahimsa is the greatest happiness,
Ahimsa is the highest truth, and Ahimsa is the greatest teaching

From The Mahabharata First Millenium BC.

As the rather more modern Bard aka Shakespeare put it:
What's he that wishes so?
My cousin Westmoreland? No, my fair cousin;
If we are mark'd to die, we are enow
To do our country loss; and if to live,
The fewer men, the greater share of honor.
God's will! I pray thee, wish not one man more.
By Jove, I am not covetous for gold,
Nor care I who doth feed upon my cost;
It yearns me not if men my garments wear;
Such outward things dwell not in my desires.
But if it be a sin to covet honor,
I am the most offending soul alive.
No, faith, my coz, wish not a man from England.
God's peace! I would not lose so great an honor
As one man more methinks would share from me
For the best hope I have. O, do not wish one more!
Rather proclaim it, Westmoreland, through my host,
That he which hath no stomach to this fight,
Let him depart; his passport shall be made,
And crowns for convoy put into his purse;
We would not die in that man's company
That fears his fellowship to die with us.
This day is call'd the feast of Crispian.
He that outlives this day, and comes safe home,
Will stand a tip-toe when this day is nam'd,
And rouse him at the name of Crispian.
He that shall live this day, and see old age,
Will yearly on the vigil feast his neighbors,
And say "To-morrow is Saint Crispian."
Then will he strip his sleeve and show his scars,
And say "These wounds I had on Crispian's day."
Old men forget; yet all shall be forgot,
But he'll remember, with advantages,
What feats he did that day. Then shall our names,
Familiar in his mouth as household words-
Harry the King, Bedford and Exeter,
Warwick and Talbot, Salisbury and Gloucester-
Be in their flowing cups freshly rememb'red.
This story shall the good man teach his son;
And Crispin Crispian shall ne'er go by,
From this day to the ending of the world,
But we in it shall be remembered-
We few, we happy few, we band of brothers;
For he to-day that sheds his blood with me
Shall be my brother; be he ne'er so vile,
This day shall gentle his condition;
And gentlemen in England now-a-bed
Shall think themselves accurs'd they were not here,
And hold their manhoods cheap whiles any speaks
That fought with us upon Saint Crispin's day.

Re: HUNGER-STRIKE TO PROMOTE POLICY OF ZERO-TOLERANCE OF ABUSE IN BUDDHISM  6:3:2018
Dear Rinpoche
You may remember me as the British Buddhist who wrote to you a few weeks ago requesting an interview on the above topic - As a former student of Sogyal Rinpoche I have taken a stand against the violent - sexually and psychologically exploitative behaviour of the founder of the Rigpa Organization that has recently been revealed to the public and the sangha as I feel this crucial issue is not being addressed properly and the Rigpa Organization is drastically under-reacting to this disturbing and traumatic turn of events - For a while now I have been publicly requesting those who teach at Rigpa London to denounce Sogyal and support the Zero-Tolerance policy -
Response from Rigpa Organization has been zero!
As I said in my previous message to you - I understand that you are extremely busy and plan your schedule far in advance so probably do not have the time for an interview with me on your current tour of Great Britain - Having had no response from you or your Khyentse Foundation I am assuming that the interview will not happen on this tour -
However - I understand that you are a film-maker and thought that if you happened to be in Western Britain at some time in the future I would be happy to show you where Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche lived with my friend Bill in a village in West Cornwall where I live - I could also show you the Buddha-statue that Trungpa Rinpoche fashioned out of clay and gave to Bill Pickard - an English scholar and practitioner of Buddhism since the 1940s - Bill passed the statue on to me in the 1980s when I became initiated into Tibetan Buddhism - West Cornwall also has many interesting things to see such as a prehistoric stone-circle used by Druids which would make an excellent theatre of public debate on film - And an excellent meeting of the cultures of east and west in pursuit of truth -
Again however I realize that with your busy teaching and practice schedule such travels are unlikely - Therefore I would be happy to travel to a different part of Britain to interview you at any time in the future that is convenient to you if you would be happy to grant this -
In the meantime - whilst I know that you have made some public statements on the problem of abuse in Buddhism I would sincerely appreciate it if you would respond to my approaches with a statement in support of the offering and the principle of ZERO-TOLERANCE OF ABUSE IN BUDDHISM - or conversely - if you feel unable to do this it would be most helpful if you would give a statement saying why not - This would help further clarify your position on the topic for the public -
I hope Rinpoche can see the motivation for my actions -
Sadly - if I receive no response whatsoever from you before you teach in London I will go on HUNGER-STRIKE for Saturday and Sunday in protest at your non-response - if such is the case - I hope not -
Kind regards - Jeremy Schanche - ZERO-TOLERANCE OF ABUSE IN BUDDHISM CAMPAIGN

Hunger Strike For ZERO-TOLERANCE OF ABUSE IN BUDDHISM - Rigpa UK - February 2018

The Rigpa organization needs to deal honestly with the problem of the abusive character who founded it.  Sogyal aka Rinpoche is a violent and sexually abusive man who used his unique position of power to manipulate countless people, cynically exploiting and bullying his way through a life-long career of greed and indulgence - and watching endless television - whilst ostensibly operating as a spiritual teacher.  Since all my attempts to get Rigpa Org to even talk to me about this grave problem have been ignored, I am staging a one-day Hunger-Strike to coincide with Rigpa UK's one day retreat - THE HEART OF COMPASSION - Read more in The Limpet...

Calling PATRICK GAFFNEY Rigpa Org - NOW HEAR THIS -

Open Letter To:  Patrick Gaffney - Right-Hand-Man of Sogyal Aka Rinpoche and Head-Insider at Rigpa International Inc    21:1:2018
Patrick Gaffney.jpg

Dear Patrick -
You might possibly remember me from London - Kathmandu - The French Alps - Cornwall - Sikkim etc etc - I remember sharing a table with you once at the Bir Hotel in Boudhanath - Nepal - I seem to recall you complaining about the service!  Anyway Patrick I address you today as I have had no response whatsoever from you or Phillip Phillippou or Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche or Sogyal or anyone at all at the Rigpa business organization and time is running short - I have made numerous sincere attempts to initiate a dialogue with all of yous but you continue a policy of ignorance towards me -
I appeal to your sense of reason - what is best in this situation ~  I suggest the best thing is if you talk to me very soon - I have already set out my objections to the Rigpa Organization in London hosting teachers who have failed to denounce Sogyal the Abuser - If you continue to ignore me and go forward with this plan I will initiate my high-profile campaign of public attention on the Rigpa organization and all it stands for - and all it has hidden - and I know things that not a single living person has yet alluded to in the press - things that will make quite a stir -
This isn-t a boast but just to let you know what is possible:  In my first ever campaign I was one of a tiny group of Cornish citizens who defeated a business consortium that included the future King of England - Charles Windsor - They withdrew their stupid plan and the Holy Headland of Penzance was saved from being buried under thousands of tons of Royal concrete!  Our weapons were felt-tip pens and photocopiers -
Basically Patrick I am becoming a bit cheesed off with taking time out from my work to squabble with a bunch of Buddhists about whether or not anyone thinks it fit to discuss the rampant sexual exploitation and violent tyrannical madness of poor deluded Sogyal - whilst the show carries on as normal like nothing ever happened!
I have tried to point out to yous that the general public are going to see this thing in a very different light to the Buddhist community and in many ways a religious organization should be answerable to the general public whom it is ostensibly liberating from darkness - Hypocrisy will be rooted out and exposed to the eyes of the world - is this the way you wish things to go ~
So this is your final friendly word of advice to talk to me right away - or brace yourself for a fire-storm of Truth like you-ve never seen - Or perhaps a pathetically weak and ill-thought-out campaign from a well-meaning but clueless nutter - View it how you wish - it will soon manifest in your physical face -
So come on Patrick - why not do the decent thing like an English gentleman and talk to an old Dharma Brother who like so many others is wrestling with a huge Dharma-problem!
I warmly await your response - Kind Regards - Jeremy Schanche

Heads on Spikes

The December issue of The Limpet features an article on violence and politics which was written in September/October '15.  Things have moved on rapidly since then, with a wave of Fascist Islamic guerilla warfare erupting across the Western World.  Africa and the 'Middle East' have also suffered mass murder at the hands of these new killers, the jihadis who kill innocent children, women, men, Muslim, Christian and Atheist alike.
  I believe there comes a time when you have to fight back, to defend the lives of your people, your civilization such as it is, your culture, your rule of law.  We had to fight in '39, to stop an insane ultra-right-wing death-cult from murdering us all, and in many ways we are in a similar situation today.  Cameron's response is bullshit and he knows it.  His 'contribution' so far is infinitesimal - there are already too many aircraft in the region with nothing to do.  5,000 sorties resulting in a handful of 'airstrikes'...  The reality is that to conquer a territory you have to actually go there.

Recipe for Peace:   1)  'Great Powers' stop interfering with and exploiting less powerful countries.  2)  Superpowers to promote justice, equality and free-thought in all their dealings.  3)  A genuine coalition of international forces to wage war on the Fascist Islamic State, take as many prisoners as possible and cure them.

We must defend ourselves with arms but we must also sow the seeds of peace for the future.  Fascism and political violence are diseases that originate in the Mind.  It all starts with an idea, a concept.  An extremely insubstantial, non-physical, abstract entity of mere conceptuality.  Mistaken ideas lead to mistaken actions.  The war is one of ideology.  To stop the spread of dangerous and murderous ideas, you need to create a world-climate of reason, tolerance, free-thought and logic.
