If you live in a ‘Free Society’ that calls itself a ‘Democracy’, and you believe your government is violating international law, should you be able to question your government about it and expect to get a straight answer?If the ‘Independent Police Complaints Authority’ is independent, and you ask them if they are a limited company, do you have a right to an answer to your question, or is it right that they ignore your question?Is this the ‘independence’ they talk of?And if you have evidence of a citizen being tortured by the police, and you go to a police station to report that crime, is it right that they can refuse to investigate the torture you are alleging, even though their own investigation into the same incident is not looking at it as a torture-case?
In my country I am free enough to ask these questions – but will my government be as free with its answers as I am with my questions?I must admit, it gets a little frustrating sometimes…..but without vigorous debate, can we hope to protect and increase our Democracy?You decide!
